Because of the differents uses of the CIMIL images archive, let's define one
name per different user type :
CIMIL images archive
the images provider is one of the user who proposes medical images
the archivist is the manager of the CIMIL images archive
the anonymous is one of the user who consults the CIMIL images archive
Assessment
the radiologist is one of the known users who participates to the assessment by
given his mind on boundary detection
the unknown radiologist has the same role than the radiologist, but he registred
itself and is not necessary known by the CIMIL
the statisticien is the person in charge of the statistical part for the
assessment
Here are the different steps to build the CIMIL images archive :
1 - an images provider uploads images with the images
upload form
2 - the archivist checks the uploaded images and decides to add or not them in
the CIMIL images archive and decides to allow or not the public consultation for
each one, with the archive
building form
3 - an anonymous consults the MRCAS images archive with the consultation
form
Here are the different steps to lead the assessment :
4 - the statisticien build the tests by given wich images it contains and by
given the statistical parameters of it, precises the current test (there is no
web interface for this purpose)
5 - an unknown radiologist or a radiologist precises some points of the
boundary on a medical image with the boundary
indication form
6 - the statisticien gets back the original results (in text format) with the import
in database form and a visual representation of the results with the visual
analyse form
The archivist, statisticien and server administrator are in charge to
maintain, update, backup and archive the differents informations (there is no
web interface for this purpose)
To access to those forms, the homepage of the CIMIL and the
related links have to be used : http://mrcas.mae.ntu.edu.sg
(This main page is accessible from every web documents of the CIMIL)
Some documents have a restricted access wich necessites the knowledge of a
login - password. The webmaster and the persons in charge of the project manage
the deliver of the key.
To report some remarks, errors, complains, ... the email on the bottom of the
web document has to be used: webmaster@mrcas.mae.ntu.edu.sg
The newest versions of browsers has to be used to run the applets
1 - images upload form

task : use this form to upload an image with related informations so that it
can be added to the archive after the archivist checks it
user : an images provider, no restriction
instructions to fill the form :
only field with * sign are optionnal
do not use specific caracters
File to upload : browse in local to give the image to upload, the size of the
image is limited but no other verification is done
Image Name : no constraint, just try to give a understanding name
for the list choice field, choose OTHER if nothing fit, then use the Notes field
to give some details
for the text fields, there is no format constraint
to send the form, click on the Submit button
To upload many images, the previous form can be re-used with the Back button
of the browser and be sent again after the new values had been changed
possible troubleshootings :
an error message is return in case of problem
use the Back button of the browser to eventually correct the error or contact
the administrator by email
to report the problem by indicated the URL and the error number
examples wich return an error message :
the uploaded image is to big
some data are missing
examples of error wich are not catch :
empty file or non image file are not checked
specific caracters will be removed in the server
bad values are not checked, except list choice values
2 - archive building form

task :
use this form to check the uploaded images , correct the form , decide to add or
not the image in the CIMIL archive and decide to allow or not public access to
it
each uploded image is treated with it's related form
the format is checked by the system to allow the conversion to GIF format
if it has a standard format, the archivist can crop it to hide confidential
informations, this affect only the public consultation, indeed the original
image is kept in the MRCAS images archive
if the format is not reconized, the archivist can download the file to analyse
it in local, but this can not be published
user : the archivist, restricted access
instructions to fill the form :
the initial form is the form the images provider sent
the values can be changed and the initial form can be restore with the
Reset button
use the applet to draw a rectangle on the image to precise the crop
dimensions
x1, y1, x2, y2 : write the coordinates indicated on bottom of the image or leave
at 0 if crop is not useful
see the 1 - upload form instructions to fill the
other fields
after checking, add or not the image and publish it or not
to send the form, click on the Submit button
then wait to check the next image ...
when all uploaded images are checked, the archivist can restore the unwanted
images and check them again
then he can update the public web directories with the new images :
one contains the thumbnail GIF image, the second contains the original size (or
croped) GIF image and the third contains the original size (or croped) and
format image
those directories are used for the CIMIL images archive consultation with the consultation
form
build them from scratch is time consuming, otherwise only the new images are
added
when finished, a document with a link to the consultation
form is return
notes :
if the image is large, crop it at less than 512x512
possible troubleshootings :
see the 1 - upload form possible troubleshootings
if the image is not displayed, it means that it's format is not reconized,
download it to examin it
draw the rectangle from the top left corner to the bottom right corner to obtain
the crop coordinates
process the checking of the uploaded images as far as the directory is empty, do
not use the Back button of the navigator and do not use the same form several
times at the same time
3 - consultation form

use this form to consult the CIMIL images archive, limit the results by a
request via the choice listes
the images wich respond to the request are displayed in thubnails GIF format
click on one to display it's original size (or croped) in GIF format, it's
related informations and a link to the original size (or croped) and original
format image
user : an anonymous, no restriction
instructions to fill the form :
Image Name : request images by name, write some caracters of it's name or leave
blank
choice listes : if no request with this field, select All
possible troubleshootings :
some data are missing
4 - assessment tests definition
no web tool for this, telnet session on the CIMIL server (restricted access)
task :
give a new test number
define the images liste for this test
fixe it's statistical parameters to provide randomly an image for the assessment
write some other informations (those influe the boundary
indication form)
user : the statisticien, restricted access
possible troubleshootings :
be sure that each image for the test exists in the CIMIL images archive
wrong rights on the files can stop the access
lock file not empty
5 - boundary indication form
There is 2 different ways to participate to the assessment :
- by following the links from the CIMIL main page : it corresponds to the open
assessment.
The user checks-in itself in the users database and starts the assessment
- by giving the complet URL of a document wich is not reachable from the main
page.
The user is known by the MRCAS, and receives the URL by email for example.
He can not register itself, his login/password is imposed.
This corresponds to the private assessment.

use this form to participate to the detection boundary assessment

user : a radiologist, no restriction just a check in
instructions to fill the form and use the applet:
check in with the check in from or enter the login - password
wait until the applet is running
Read the instructions, indeed, according to the interpolation method, the
procedure is not exactly the same for each test
during the treatment, some messages appear on the bottom of the browser
to obtain a new image, click on NEW
wait until the image arrives
click on ADD to begin and follow the instructions
when finished, click on the SEND button and confirm, to send the results
note that if the curve is not good (out the image borders, not well defined,
...) the results are refused and the user has to change his points.
then restart with a new image ...
if the test is finished, it means if the user saw all it's images in a short
period, a web message is return which invites the radiologist to participate
again later or to follow with other tests. He will receive an email the day he
can start again the finished test.
possible troubleshootings :
if too much points no more are added, delete or move some points to continue
the click or release out the image frame don't affect the results
the curve is incoherent : move the center in the case of the radial
representation
when the NEW button is pressed, no image arrives : check the version of the
browser, install the newest one, or contact the administrator
the same image is allways displayed : in the browser preferences, put the cache
size at 0, but prefer to contact the administrator
the results seem to be sent but the image doesn't disappear : contact the
administrator
6 - visual analyse form

It's only a qualitative tool
use this form to display the results for a given (or not) test, by a given user
(or not), for a requested (or not) image
the images wich respond to the request are displayed in thubnails GIF format
click on one to display it's informations, and the applet
the applet displays the image in original size (or croped) in GIF format, with
the curves corresponding to the results drawn on it
a check panel allows to deselect or reselect some user's treatments
